Career Highlights

Carlo Pietrobelli is a professor, policy advisor and consultant on innovation, competitiveness and industrial development and policy. His work on clusters and value chains has been influential in many developing countries and in scholarly debates.

He is currently Lead Economist in the Competitiveness and Innovation Division of the Inter-American Development Bank, Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University and Professor of Economics at the University Roma Tre, Italy (on leave). His recent activities at the IDB include policy advice and loans preparation on cluster and value chains programs, impact assessment of these programs, innovation and industrial policies, support for Competitiveness and Innovation Councils, local economic development programs and support programs for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Prior to joining the IDB (2009), he directed the Center for Studies in the Economics of Institutions (CREI) at the University of Roma Tre, and was Deputy Rector for promoting links between the University and the private sector and Head of Industrial Liaison Office of the University.

He has published widely in international journals and his last books were published by Harvard University Press, Edward Elgar and Routledge.

He holds a PhD in Economics from Oxford University and has been a regular policy advisor to governments in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America and to international organizations like the European Commission, the World Bank, CAF, the OECD and various United Nations' agencies (IFAD, ECLAC, UNIDO, UNCTAD, ILO, ITC).
